Thomas (John) is born in Boston.

John Thomas subsequently moves to Cambridge, attends Boston University, and sets a world record in the high jump in 1960. He wins a bronze medal in the event in the 1960 Olympics and a silver medal in the 1964 Olympics. Thomas goes on to serve as athletic director at Roxbury Community College. He dies in Brockton on January 15, 2013.
